Writers' Conference

A tradition at Alta Vista for over 10 years, the Young Writers' Conference is is organized like an adult writers’ conference. Prior to the event, students receive a program that includes speaker biographies, workshop choices, literary games and puzzles. The students can then register their workshop choices through our online registration process. Each student will choose 3 to 4 different workshops to attend. The fun begins with a motivational address by a keynote speaker. From there, students receive their personalized schedule for the day, name tags, note pads, writing implements and themed t-shirt. After participating in the workshops students close with a wrap-up session where they share some of what they learned with their peers. For students, teachers, volunteers and guests, it is an unforgettable, fun and educational day.

45 professional writers teach 75 workshops on topics ranging from news writing to short stories and even how to write persuasive advertisements. Our guest writers do not lecture; they teach the kids to write. Children learn fast and after a day of exposure to the professionals, some pint-sized scribblers become passionate about writing. The day becomes a stepping stone toward further literary endeavors. The conference can jolt kids out of feeling “ho hum” about English assignments. Our professional writers facilitate young writers in finding their inner voices and then a skill for life.

The Young Writers' Conference (YWC) is proud to continue their tradition of community service at Alta Vista Elementary, where it was founded 11 years ago, on Friday, March 27th.  The YWC staff and workshop instructors donate their time and launch the theme for the following season, 2009-10.  The new theme is Much Ado About Writing. The Young Writers' Conference is a Los Angeles based organization dedicated to improving young people's writing skills by first instilling a passion for writing.

Alta Vista 2009"We are proud that we have been able to continue to present this day long, professional conference as our gift to Alta Vista, our founding school," comments YWC co-founder, Julie Moore.  "Everyone that is involved with the conference donates their time and talents for this one annual conference."

"Since the beginning of the school year, we have been working with the Young Writers' Conference directors to make today an exceptional day," explains Alta Vista principal,

Anthony J. Taranto.  "Teachers, school staff, parents, volunteers, sponsors, Alta Vista Student Council, and PTA have worked hard to support this experience, which is designed to spark student's creativity and provide them with the opportunity to express themselves in new and exciting ways. We want to thank them, along with everyone in the Young Writers' Conference organization for donating their time, talents, and energies to our Alta Vista community."

The Alta Vista YWC Student Committee (pictured above) has been busy running a writing contest, an in-school public relations campaign, and working on the conference production.  Winners of the writing contest will have their worked featured on the school and the YWC websites.  All the contest entries will be published in a special book and donated to the Alta Vista library by Scribble Press.
