PTA President's Message

Mary Ganis
Every time I blink, it’s a new month!  Happy January and Happy New Year!
We hope everyone had a chance to rest and relax a little over the Winter Break.
We are almost to our halfway mark of the school year, so I thought this would be a great time to shout out a big THANK YOU to everyone who has helped out so tremendously this year.  Oftentimes, parents will stop me on campus or send me an email to tell me what a great job the PTA is doing this year.  Rest assured this would not be possible without the help of each and every one of the people on this Board, and each and every one of you volunteers who dedicate your time and efforts to our school and children.  In the words of Vince Lombardi, “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.”   It’s a sincere pleasure to work with all of you as a team; you make it too much fun to be called “work” or “volunteering”. A Special thank you to our two new Fifth grade coordinators, Colleen Wolf and Eresha Markalanda.
Verengo Solar is offering $500.00 back to Alta Vista PTA for anyone who signs up with them for Solar!  Please see your PTA Newsletter for more information from Bob Reid (a parent at our school) about this excellent Energy Saving idea.
It’s time for the Nominating Committee to be formed.   Here is a brief introduction to the Nominating Committee description and duties:
The purpose of the nominating committee is to recognize and seek qualified nominees for the elected leadership of the PTA. The members of the committee, therefore, have a tremendous influence on the future of the PTA and should be selected carefully.
Serving on a nominating committee is an honor and a privilege. This committee is the PTAs most influential internal body, and because it deals with sensitive issues, deliberations of this committee are kept confidential.
Nominating committee members should have a broad acquaintance with the membership and an understanding of the organization's functions and its purposes. The committee should include both experienced leadership as well as newer members.  No member shall serve on the nominating committee for two consecutive years.
If you are interested in serving on the Nominating Committee this year, please contact our Parliamentarian, Ian Green, at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

A New Year’s toast to love and laughter and Wildcat families living happily ever after.

Happy New Year Wildcat Families:

I hope that you all had a restful and fun filled winter break.  It is hard to believe that we are in January already.  The school year is rapidly passing by.

With a new year comes a variety of new events and programs that take place at our school. On Saturday, February 6, 2010 from 9:30am to 11:00am, a new to Alta Vista Kindergarten open house will be held on the Kindergarten playground.  Parents and children will get a chance to learn about our kindergarten program, meet the team, and visit classrooms.  This should be a fun yet informative time, so please pass this information on to any family you know who will have a kindergarten aged student attending Alta Vista in the fall.

In February, all students will participate in Jump Rope for Heart.  In March, our annual Writers Conference will be held for students in third thru fifth grade.  In April, all students will participate in our annual Jog-A-Thon. More information will be posted on our school website as the dates draw near.

Thank you for your support of the Scholastic Book Fair in December.  As result of your time commitment and purchasing of books the event was a BIG success.  WE are thankful for continued support!

It’s a great day to be a Wildcat!!!!

Mr. Taranto
